Evocative and entertaining, this is travel memoir that peels back the veneer of Britain to expose the preoccupations of its people.

Whether he’s chatting with bored tax exiles on the Isle of Man, wrestling down a mainsail during a titanic gale, or crashing a Scottish house party where the kilted guests turn out to be Americans, Raban is alert to the slightest nuance of meaning. Just goes to show that there's a ram-spinning, swashbuckling adventure right there on your doorstep. While the stories of the generous hospitality she received along the run are heartfelt and encouraging, she struggles to get outside of her own solipsistic universe. Running 5,000 miles is a truly remarkable achievement, and the fact that Elise emerged from it with a smile on her face and a total lack of ego speaks wonders to her character. It's a book that certainly has its merits, but personally, I was seeking a stronger narrative thread to keep me fully engaged. I certainly enjoyed her book and raced through it - it was a good holiday read as I was walking a section of the South West Coast Path for a week - I enjoyed reading about her journey through the beautiful Dorset coast. However, the balance in some of these chapters just feels a bit off, and while I enjoyed reading this, I think the book itself wasn't well resolved as one thing or the other. What's brilliant about the book is the way Raban combines memoir, travel writing about his own country, and descriptions of the awesome power of the sea and Britain's coastline.

I was expecting her to be spending the whole time on the coast path (or near to it) pretty much alone and camping as she went in a similar vein as The Salt Path (although that was a couple).Those are the markers in time but they are not really that relevant, they help give context to how he is writing about things and what those things meant at that time. There are also pleasing asides detailing other gentlemen’s sailing adventures over several centuries.

Elise has such a self-deprecating and humble way of telling her story - from the ecstasy and highs to the sadness, self-doubt and lows. Using beautifully crafted language, his descriptions of the sea in its various moods, small ports and (crumbling) villages are enchanting. He starts in the hyper-conservative tax dodge of the Isle of Man, and then works his way around the coast, expressing horror in various degrees at the general warm-beer-and-gravy stench of the whole island, the toxic Thatcherism that plagued the place, his lousy childhood, etc. Someone said, "Life is too short to read a bad book," and while this isn't necessarily a bad book, it's not, imo, a good book.I enjoyed the autobiographical sections,his school and father and also the discussion of the changing role of the Church of England and his meeting with Philip Larkin in Hull. This might be a story about someone going for a gargantuan run but it's about mind over matter and the profound impact kindness in society has on us.
