Empire feels like you’re a kid and your mum has bumped into her boring friend at the supermarket and he won’t stop talking. My dude, if the first book is this long (I'm half way through exactly and have been at it literally all day), then how chucky will the trilogy be? We still have some of the best stuff from first: Gabe and Dior's complex relationship, deep world building, bloody action all over the place, underdog characters you just can't help but root for, villains you want to behead yourself, and a little humor to light the gritty world we're transported to.

It is a book that gives so much context to the world that these characters inhabit and puts time and energy into developing a satisfying build-up to the final book. The tale sweeps into the second wave of the story right where we left off with the same addicting and rich storytelling. First, we have the present day, where Gabriel is forced to tell his story to his captor: Jean-François. First things first, the biggest thank you to Harper Collins for sending me a proof copy of this book.

Every character, every scene - even setting, which plays a huge role the story - are ramped up to 1,000. Like the fact that we spend hundreds of pages, listening to Gabe explain why he will never touch a drop of drink. I read this arc straight after completing a re-read of book one, and so I can confidently say book one is my favourite.Granted, you were a little interested at first, but now the supermarket is closing and he’s not heard the tannoy announcing they need to close soon. It was everything I was hoping for and you best believe I’m purchasing it the day it releases to finish it! To have been able to see myself in a character as timely as my own grief occurred was… somewhat indescribable.
