Being used to using liquid shampoos, I was sure that I would prefer a liquid soap for washing my dog.

How long does a dog shampoo bar last?A dog shampoo bar can last as long as two bottles of liquid shampoo, depending on the size of your pet and the frequency of baths. This estimate is based on average usage, but the actual lifespan of your shampoo bar may vary. To prolong the life of your shampoo bar, make sure to store it properly between uses. We recommend using a soap dish or soap saver bag that allows the bar to drain and dry effectively. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons that people are often told not to use their own shampoos on their dogs. A dog’s skin is more alkaline than human skin. Their skin is said to have a pH above 7, on the alkaline side, whereas ours has a pH on the acidic side (in the 5.5 range). Once your dog’s fur is wet, take the shampoo bar in your hand. Rub the bar directly onto your dog’s fur, using gentle circular motions to create a rich lather. Be sure to cover all areas, paying particular attention to any areas that are especially dirty or smelly. So, you’d think that my answer is going to be that a dog’s more alkaline pH will better tolerate soap’s higher pH…

After the soap bars are cured, grate the soap with a box grater, use the large grate. Place a handful of the soap shavings in a quart jar and fill with warm water. Let sit overnight or for a few days. The soap shavings will soften up and eventually liquefy. When all are dissolved, gently shake the jar and then leave it to set up for a week or so. This will allow any large pieces to settle to the bottom. Carefully pour the liquid into a bottle (recycled dish soap bottles with spout tops work great!) and use this to shampoo your pet.What I would say is that it’s probably best touse a lightweight type conditioner on your dog, and one with mild ingredients, in case not all of the conditioner gets rinsed away. Using a bar soap is a whole other game. I purposefully made large bars of soap so that I could easily grip onto them when I wash my dog. We start out by wetting down all of her fur before proceeding to rub the bars of soap all over her coat.
