For the Love of Bob is a children's version of The World According to Bob and the sequel to Bob: No Ordinary Cat. It was released on 3 July 2014. I read this in the classroom at the school where I teach. I hadn't seen it before, when one of the children handed it to me to read (a class of 2 and 3 year olds). I had just recently read the actual memoir of Bob and James and when I realized this was a fictional account, I was curious to see how James translated it into fiction for kids.

My Name is Bob by James Bowen and Garry Jenkins tells the incredible true story of a stray cat who was destined for fame. Bob had not always been a stray. He once belonged to a sweet, old woman. When the woman passed away, Bob had nowhere to go. Otherwise, this adaptation of James Bowen's autobiography, his account of how he was saved by the unlikely companionship of Bob, is pretty likable stuff. Luke Treadaway's performance is perfectly fine; his depiction of a drug user who's lost everything and is living rough comes across as credible enough. If there's a sense of fantasy about the effect Bob has on his fortunes - Londoners react to Bob as though they've never seen a cat before - then you just have to go with it to an extent. The film makes it clear that Bob personifies James's salvation, and it was a lovely detail to discover one of the feline actors playing the cat was none other than Bob himself.

A film was optioned by London-based Shooting Script Films and its producer Adam Rolston, in March 2014. [11] In August 2015, Variety announced that Luke Treadaway was to star in the film and that Roger Spottiswoode was to direct, with shooting in London to begin in October. After getting into a fight with a resident street cat, Bob found his way to James Bowen, a local street performer. Seeing that Bob was injured, Bowen took him in and cared for his wounds. What happened next was the beginning of a lifelong friendship that can never be broken. In spring 2007, Bowen realised he wanted to better himself for the sake of Bob and he decided to quit the heroin he was on and go onto a methadone programme. He continued busking in Covent Garden and living in a supported housing programme in Tottenham, London. As Bob constantly followed Bowen when he was going to work, Bowen bought Bob a harness for safety and allowed him to come along to his regular spots in Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus, travelling in the window seat of the number 73 bus. The public reaction was positive and the pair became locally well known, their visibility increasing still further when Bowen began selling The Big Issue. The public began uploading videos of Bowen and Bob to YouTube and tourists would visit Covent Garden to see them. During this time, Bowen decided to conclude his methadone treatment. He credits this development to Bob, saying "I believe it came down to this little man. He came and asked me for help and he needed me more than I needed to abuse my own body.
