This one is not only pocket-friendly in size but also in weight at a mere 188g, and works in tandem with the smartphone friendly Canon Mini Print app. In fact, 10 integrated lens modes and 10 film modes can provide up to 100 different effects when combined, going some way to both ape and combat the image editing apps on our smartphones, should we want to. The Instax Mini Evo is a beautiful homage to film cameras and one that nobody would be embarrassed to pull out at any event. A Micro-USB-to-USB-A cable is included in the box, but everyone and their mother has switched to USB-C now; it's annoying to have to carry a USB-A charger (not included) just for the Instax Mini Evo if you're traveling.

The wide-angle lens is good enough for shots of one or two people together—its 28mm angle is just a little narrower than the main lens on most smartphones. It has a much more angular design than the smooth cruves of the LiPlay, and as mentioned above it also has a usefully textured surface. Not everything works flawlessly—because the live feed transmits over Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi, the view is slightly choppy, for example. Taking cues from Fujifilm’s X Series lineup of mirrorless cameras, the Mini Evo features a classic retro-inspired body with a black-on-silver finish.It's surrounded by a circular lens dial which is used to cycle through the 10 different lens effects - Normal, Vignette, Soft Focus, Blur, Fisheye, Colour Shift, Light Leak, Mirror, Double Exposure, and Half-frame. The print slot is found on the left-hand side of the Instax Mini Evo (when viewed from the rear), so make sure it is unobstructed when you press the print button. Alternatively, for kids or anybody without a smartphone or dedicated camera, it might also be appealing.

Offering 100 ways to capture images and the highest-ever instax instant print quality, all in a timeless classic design, the mini Evo is a unique companion for chronicling and sharing life’s milestones in an instant. It also means that shots can be transferred the other way from the Mini Evo to our smartphone for sharing on social media or with friends and family. The features that do matter are all present: flash, selfie mirror, dual shutter buttons for portrait and landscape orientation (just like on the Mini 90), a built-in timer, ¾-inch tripod mount, 3-inch display (non-touchscreen unfortunately), the lens dial that switches between 10 effects with every rotation, a film dial that changes between 10 film effects, the cold shoe mount, and an effect reset button (that little silver button to the right of the cold shoe). A dotted display at the bottom of the screen shows how many prints you’ve got left in your film pack.The retro looks are sure to attract shutterbugs, but the camera is a little frustrating to use in practice. It's a stronger bet for folks looking for a print-on-demand option for instant photography, with the filters and film styles you don't get from analog cameras like the Instax Mini 11.

It's best to think of the Mini Evo's camera as a great way to see your images before you print - at least you won’t waste that expensive film with under/over exposed photos, blurred shots or those that have been framed poorly - with the added benefit of being able to share them on social media (although not that easily as it turns out). The truth of the matter is that the only Mini parts on the car are the boot hinges which are used to open and shut both the driver and passenger doors!

With print quality set to "Instax Rich", the Mini Evo produces photos that are on par with Fuji's fully analogue instant cameras. Printing photos that you may not otherwise want leads to extra film packs in landfills and additional expenses.
