Nose (undiluted): a bit of oak, malted barley, a suggestion of grapes, some hazelnuts, some milk chocolate Not too impressive on the palate, rather flat, light and lifeless, but the nose is fantastic. I could sit and sniff this one for hours on end; it’s so expressive and complex it’s a little astounding. Though, the amazingness of the aroma makes the somewhat blandness of the palate even more noticeable. What’s there, on the palate, isn’t bad, it’s nicely balanced and not-terrible… but far from exciting or interesting. The Glenlivet 21yr Single Malt: two double golds, one gold, and one silver medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition between 2007 and 2010 and scores of 94 and 93 from the Beverage Testing Institute between 2009 and 2010.

The finish is sweet with that late peppery warmth. The pear and apple notes fade, followed by the sweetness. A nuttiness - imagine hazelnut especially - develops to accentuate the earthy and warming baking spices, which combine to drag out the otherwise short finish. a b Morrow, David (1 September 2022). Illicit distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside area from 1700s but were largely made redundant with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. [12] It was under this legislation that legal distilleries could be formed, subject to holding a license. Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, was allegedly instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Although there is no historical record of his involvement in the issue, his tenant, George Smith, who was operating an illicit distillery on his Upper Drummin farm at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. [8] [13] [14] [15] My tasting of this wasn’t done in ideal conditions, as I tasted it (two 50ml samples) from a plastic cup on a flight from Toronto to Edmonton.Marketing Manager for Pernod Ricard Global Travel Retail, Laura Lung, commented: “ With The Glenlivet Triple Cask Flavour Discovery and our new personalisation service, we hope to have crafted a unique experience that will both help inspire consumers to discover which of The Glenlivet Triple Cask expressions is best matched to their taste preference, as well as provide a one-of-a-kind gift and treasured memory. The Glenlivet Distiller's Reserve is part of the new Triple Cask range of single malts, which are exclusive to the travel retail sector. It is a rebranding of the previous Master Distiller's Reserve release. The other two whiskies in the range are the White Oak Reserve (which replaces the Solera Vatted) and the Rare Cask (which is a re-naming of the Small Batch). As the name suggests, three casks have been used for maturation for each bottling. In the case of the Distiller's Reserve these are first-fill American white oak, European oak and ex-sherry casks used in combination. The final bottling in the series is the Rare Cask, so called because it is released in small batches. It is spicy and sweet on the nose, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg an caramel. Oak plays a big part in the nose here as do peaches, apricots and ginger. Finish:Smooth easy finish that starts with a tangy fruit and finishes with a smooth almost dark chocolate candy-like flavor. Is Glenlivet Distiller’s Reserve Approachable? The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland that produces single malt Scotch whisky. It is the oldest legal distillery in Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since. [1] The distillery remained open throughout the Great Depression and its only closure came during World War II. The Glenlivet distillery has grown in the post-war period to become one of the biggest single malt distilleries. The Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally [2] after Glenfiddich.George Smith's decision would prove to be an unpopular decision; every other distiller was operating illegally at the time and hoping the new Excise Act would be repealed, something which would not happen if some distillers accepted the new law. Threats were made against Smith, so George Gordon provided Smith with two pistols to be used to ensure both his own safety and that of the distillery. [8] In 1824, The Glenlivet distillery was established at Upper Drumin by George and his youngest son John Gordon Smith. [1] [16] a b c d e f g h i Pacult, F. Paul (2005). Each of the malts has been matured in Sherry, Bourbon and European oak casks, to varying degrees. Kilgore-Marchetti, Nino (21 September 2022). "The Glenlivet Considers Space-Travelling Barley Seeds".
